Tom Gunkelman, named "Dean of Design" by the Star Tribune passed away on Saturday, May 21st, surrounded by family, friends and staff. We are deeply saddened and will miss him dearly.
His talent was extraordinary for which he won many awards and accolades, such as being named one of the "Top 100 Designers" by House Beautiful magazine for several years in a row and named "Top 50 Designers" by Elements magazine. He also received numerous ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Awards throughout the years including the "ASID Pursuit of Excellence Award" and "Designer of Distinction".
But, it was Tom's love of people, travel, and life in general that also defined who he was. He treated his staff like his family and in return we thought of him as part of our own families as well. Tom enjoyed a party and never missed a celebration. So in return, we celebrate his life.
Please feel free to leave an enjoyable memory you may have of Tom in the comments below. We'd love to hear the stories.
Hi, my name is Judy (Gunkelman) Lamphere and I'm Tom's niece from St. Cloud. I know today is a sad day for everyone who knew Uncle Tom. The one thing I remember the most about Uncle Tom is his ability to enjoy life to the fullest all the time. Even thought he was 81 years old, he was still a kid at heart. Everyone in the family fought over who could have him on holidays. We all enjoyed him and his laughter so much. I have never heard anyone that met Uncle Tom that didn't like him. His presence lit up a room! I will never forget the day he let me drive his convertible when I was only 16 (ha). I just have many good memories of him back in Fargo. We always had fun times together and you never went away without laughing. I know that Uncle Tom would never have wanted to be dependent on others for his care nor would he have liked being on oxygen the rest of his life. There is comfort in knowing that he is free from everything and now at peace. We will never forget him and I believe that his energy will live on in his design work. My condolences to all his staff and those that knew him. I know that you will all miss him very much. He led an incredible life!! Judy (Gunkelman) Lamphere
